Pinned

November brings us the first fully milled 1.3" wheels. These will have integrated spokes (non modular) which is a radical departure from what has been done recently but also a throwback to where I started. They feature a dished front, recessed m1.6 bolts on the outer ring, a positive lip and a whopping 31.5mm internal diamter which will allow us to tuck 20g/side on a plastic hanger.

These wheels will be anodized solid colors. There is no pretense of realism (there are plenty of folks who make realistic wheels and I am not one of them) so expect bright, eye catching hues and spoke patterns that draw from motorsports, biology, astronomy, geometry and whatever else might strike me.

I will be releasing 3 spoke patterns in 5 colors (10 sets per color/spoke for 150 sets total).

Ran into some issues with milling a couple of the preferred spoke patterns (I'm stil learning what is possible and what gets me laughed at) so Lotus and Bottlecap have been replaced.

Spoke patterns are as follows

MACHINE (a modified version of the bottlecap)

RAYS (semi organic motorsport 5 spoke)

SLAMMED (new wave techno mecahnical 3 spoke

Available Colors

Clear- Machined aluminum look

Charcoal Grey (#494949)

Bronze

Pink/Magenta (#FF49F7)

Blue (#0F1839) & Gold Paint Spatter

(you can enter the hex code into an online color picker to see the approximate color)

**I will open prerelease sales on October 25 at 10AM PST. **

Novemeber will also see a restock on 1.4 v2 with the addition of clear anodized barrels, gold m1.6 bolt packs for all wheels old and new, and a new 1.4 v2  spoke plate called Samsara in blue fleck carbon fiber (identical to the prviosu gold fleck...only blue)

Pinned

With the v2 release looming on the horizon I thought it might be a good idea to talk about what will be changing and what will be staying the same.

what's staying the same

Modular wheel style consisting of front and rear barrel pieces pinching a flat spoke plate

Black m1.6 hardware throughout

3d printed lock rings and hanger shells

Black anodized 6061 aluminum +4mm trip-hubs with optional 2mm spacers

Bolt spacing (this means that v1 spoke plates will work with v2 barrels)

What is changing

Increased outer diameter- wheels are .5mm bigger overall.

Increased inner diameter- for slightly bigger hangers

Front and rear barrel pieces will be milled from 6061 aluminum and hard anodized in 5 colors (Onyx, Oro, Sapphire, Emerald, and Amethyst)

Spoke plates will laser cut from 1.6mm 6061 aluminum sheet and hard anodized in 3 colors (Onyx, Oro, Argentum).

Aluminum spoke plates will be available in Mono, Haze and Outlaw

There are also a limited number of  faces cut from gold fleck forged carbon. These will be available in a new 4 spoke pattern called Synapse

Hangers have been adjusted to move the weight lower but are still 25g/side

Lock rings have been redesigned- enlarged to fit new OD and beefed up a bit

The wheels will now be sold in two parts.

Part one will contain both barrel pieces, lock rings, hanger shells, hubs, spacers, jig, and hardware. It will be $50

Part two will be the spoke plates. They will be $15 for aluminum or $20 for the limited carbon

If you buy one barrel kit and one set of spoke plates your cost will be exactly the same as the printed wheels youve been buying up til now

you can mix and match...you can buy as many spoke plates as you want...you can buy as many barrel sets as you want. have fun with it.

Pre release sales will begin on September 30 and end on October 5. Pre sales will ship on October 10 and all remaining stock will be available at that time.

Before this becomes a thing- these pieces are being produced overseas. I wish I could afford my own CNC (and have a place to put it) but that is not my situation. I will hand inspect every set before it goes out so quality will not be an issue.

there are two major reasons I've avoided 1.0 wheels for so long. the first is the lack of real estate for designing interesting spoke patterns. the second is lack of internal space for weight hangers.

Now I'm not saying I've solved either issue but here are the spoke patterns and teh hanger shell I'm runnng with.

MONO

TOURING

VOID

TRYPOPHOBIA

The hanger shell that ships with these will  be about 13g/side and use custom 5x6mm slugs

Spoke Plates, Barrel Sets, and PreLoaded Hangers will be sold separately.

Prices and Colors TBD.

Well, I decided on colors...

October is ending. PreSales for the 2 piece 1.3s are underway and going swimmingly. I really appreciate you all buying these sight unseen- it feels good to know I have earned your trust. Hoping to have prof of life photos this week though because all of us really want to see the finished product. My apologies for the mixup on colors and my gratitude to the wonderful person who pointed out the mistake. I was torn between hot pink and electric blue when i made the order and I guess part of my brain was just convinced I had chosen blue.

Enough about the present though... let's look to the future.

In addition to the remaining 1.3 stock November will see a re-up in 1.4s with the addition of clear anodized barrels for that machined look. The new blue carbon "Samsara" face will also be availabe

along with gold m1.6 bolt packs for all existing wheels.

December is going to be 1.7 month. There isnt a huge update to the design but there are some subtle changes including a slightly larger internal diameter, a slightly larger lip and open bolt holes on the mounting tabs. These will be produced in hard anodized 6061 aluminum and laser etched with the logo. I have yet to decide on colors- it will probably be greatly influenced by the  forged carbon available for the faces

The accompanying faces will all be forged carbon and as mentioned above the colors are TBD.  Spoke Patterns will be

MONOSPOKE

CYPHER

SOLACE

Maybe this is burying the lede but...in addition to the 1.7 wheels December will also see a small release of the v2 PNCHBGGY.

-forged carbon rails to decrease weight

-150mmm suggested wheelbase without a carrier bearing.

-revamped roof, hood and rear brace for cleaner body lines.

-delrin** skid accepts standard scx24 transmissions (custom transmissions for both centered and low cog offset motors are in the works)

-designed around meus double bend D90 links with outboard front and rear uppers for increased stability.

**this is still in the works and is not guaranteed. If delrin is out then a printed skid will be included

That's all. Sound Good?

there are always unforseen issues and growing pains. Let me know what you run into...

-So far i've encountered a couple tight threads- caused by the thickness of the anodizing layer. easily remedied by lubing up a bolt and running it through a couple times GENTLY.

-one report of Meus 1.0 pins not clamping tight.  I havent been able to replicate at this point- will test later. Please let me know of any and all tire issues so I can build a compatibility list. On 1.3 tires the jig isnt necessary- just lop off the bead. On 1.0 the jig is only necessary if you want a tight sidewall- if you like a little ballooning just lop off the bead.

one report of tight holes in spacers. could be laser cutting inconsistency. Spacers are the same as they've been for a year and a half but- this is the first time i'm not running the hub bolts in myself so y'all get to experience things raw..  If they are just slightly tight...run a bolt through. If they are REALLY tight and bind up then let me know and i'll have another batch cut.

I’ve been getting asked quite a lot when the next release of 1.7” wheels will be and to be 100% honest I don’t have a good answer. I’m not sure I want to make that size anymore. Period. I don’t think they offer much performance wise beyond the 1.4 (which is really a 1.6 if you measure at the lip) and having two big wheels just feels redundant.

I know there are folks that love the aesthetic- Bling bling and all that shit that lets us feel like we are somehow throwing it back to the 90s but is that enough of a reason to keep producing something?

Curious to hear your thoughts. What do you think 1.7-1.8 wheels offer?
